Electrical, in the context of a project

When a kitchen is rebuilt, a bathroom is gutted or a room is added, the electrical plan goes with it: where the outlets go, how the lighting is laid out, whether a new circuit is needed for an appliance. It is much easier and cheaper to plan this while the walls are open than to cut into finished drywall later, and it is the part of a remodel that most affects how the room works day to day.

California licenses electrical work as its own classification, and the limits on what a general contractor may do on its own are real. Rigo holds a California General B license (#1162715). For anything that requires an electrical license, such as new circuits or a panel change, we explain at the quote stage how that work will be handled and by whom. We will not suggest we are licensed for work that we are not.

Older Downey houses make the planning matter. Homes built in the post-war decades were wired for far fewer devices and appliances than a family uses today, with fewer outlets per room, minimal kitchen circuits and often no dedicated bathroom outlets that meet modern requirements. A remodel is the natural time to bring that up to date.

What to settle before your remodel starts

Decide where you want outlets, switches and lights before demolition begins. Think about where small appliances sit on the kitchen counter, where phones charge by the bed and where you want task lighting over a work surface. Adding it later costs far more.

Ask who is performing the electrical work, what license they hold and whether it will be permitted and inspected. Those answers should be in your written scope, along with who is responsible for each part of the work.

FAQ

Electrical: common questions

Are you a licensed electrician?

Rigo holds a California General B contractor license. Electrical work is licensed separately in California, so for work that requires an electrical license we tell you at the quote stage how it will be handled. We will not claim a license we do not have.

Can you add recessed lighting in a kitchen remodel?

Recessed lighting is a common part of kitchen planning. We lay out the fixtures with you, and where the electrical portion requires a licensed electrician, we explain how it will be done.

Will my old wiring be a problem in a remodel?

It can be. Older wiring may be undersized, ungrounded or damaged, and local codes may require updates when a room is remodeled. We tell you what we find when walls are opened and what it means for the project.

Do I need a new circuit for a new appliance?

Many appliances, such as ranges, dishwashers and microwaves, need their own circuit. A licensed electrician determines what your panel can support and what is required.

Does electrical work need a permit?

Most electrical changes beyond simple fixture replacement need a permit and inspection. We account for that in any project that includes electrical work.
